CHAPTER 15

Not surprisingly, I didn’t sleep well that night. I couldn’t relax and when I did fall asleep, fragments of dreams kept jerking me awake. Strange dreams where I was in my old apartment, but it really wasn’t my apartment. I had lost something important, and I kept running around tearing open cupboards and drawers, that melody and the painful cry all mixed together and playing somewhere from a speaker. When morning finally came, I was exhausted and wired at the same time, part of my body telling me that I needed more sleep, but another part giving me a strange jittery energy.

I was in a fog all day at school. It was all I could do to keep my eyes open, even if my legs were bouncing like mad under my desk and my mind seemed to be working feverishly on a problem I barely understood, and couldn’t put into words.

As soon as school was over, I felt a thousand times better. Just knowing that I was free to start work on finding answers was enough to fill me with energy. I raced down the hall and out the front entrance, searching for Trevor. We had arranged to go to Jeremy’s after school. We knew he was the guy who could help us investigate those water sounds. I had to see if I could figure out where … or who … or what … they were coming from.

On the steps, I crashed into Hollis.

“You going to Jeremy’s?” he asked me.

“Yeah, I guess.” I was trying not to sound too enthusiastic so he wouldn’t get any ideas of coming along.

“Great,” he said. “I’ll go with you. Jeremy is going to show me how to build a theremin. It’s this super-cool instrument that some Russian guy made like a hundred years ago — just a metal bar, and you don’t even touch it to play it, just wave your arms around it. You’ll love it! I told the guys I’m going to write a couple songs on it for our band.”

I grimaced. How was I going to get out of this? Hollis picked up on my hesitance.

“You don’t want me to go, right?”

“It’s not that, Hollis. Trevor and I are working on this project and we need another day or two of privacy, you know?”

“No, I don’t know,” Hollis fumed. “What’s up with you, Leo? You’re completely ignoring me. You’re hiding something from me, I know it. And now you’re hogging Jeremy.”

“We’re conducting an experiment with some recordings,” I said.

“You and your stupid experiments with your stupid recordings,” he snapped. “You cut everybody out. Fine, Leo, put on your lame headphones and live in your own little world.”

“They’re not stupid experiments!” I yelled. I wanted to prove that by telling him what I was working on, but I needed more time. “They’re really important experiments. You wouldn’t understand.”

“There. You’re doing it again,” he snapped again. “You won’t even tell me why they’re so important. You’re just like Dad, always recording, never making.
